Well, Tickle Our Whiskers....

My little girl is growing up way way too fast! It's official, she's now a teenager. I can't believe how fast time has flown by. It seems like yesterday, we were celebrating her 10th birthday with fun Taylor Swift backstage passes that I made for the invites (which are still my favorite!) That experience was awesome but there is something to be said about the craziness of thirteen-year old girls! Oh my! My daughter chose to have a 'Mustache Bash' as her theme. What a crazy girl! It is a fun fad that seems to have hit everywhere but I never would have imagined my daughter wanting to have a party revolving around facial hair! But it was a blast!

I created the invites with my daughter instructing me what she wanted much like an art director. LOL She wanted her invites to have a mustache that her friends could cut out if they wanted and we also added a funny QR-code that we loaded with a funny YouTube video called "The Mustache Rap"! Granted, I am not sure how many of her friends had the capabilities to scan the code, but she insisted that it would be fun to add.

I don't know about the rest of you but I am addicted to Pinterest. There are so many awesome things on there...fun recipes, inspirational quotes, ideas for design, fashion tips, party ideas, etc. I just LOVE it! Anyhow, I found so many great ideas for photo props on there. I really wish that I had a machine to custom laser cut because I could have done some really amazing things! But in any case, I think that considering, I did a pretty bang-up job and the girls absolutely loved playing with the props and taking photos. Of course, I also added some other fun props like feather boas, a big puffy hat, sunglasses, wigs...the girls had a blast!

The cake turned out pretty awesome, too...especially considering that MOI made it! Yes, ME! LOL I saw an idea a few years ago to make a really bold rainbow colored cake and had wanted to do it since but just hadn't until now. I decided that it would be so cool to make a cake in the shape of a mustache and use black frosting (which was very interesting watching the kids eat, by the way!) and then cut into it to reveal a blast of bold color! It was awesome! I am so proud of myself! hahahaha The goody bags were white lunch sacks that featured bow ties and I also cut out mustaches and punched a hole where I threaded a bendy straw through and inserted into the back of the bags. It turned out so cute! My daughter said that this was probably her most favorite birthday ever! When a mom puts as much work into a party like this, that really makes you feel great to hear words like that! :)

Goodbye, 2011! Hello, 2012!

I haven't posted on here for awhile...we've been so busy with work, football, basketball, school concerts, and a bunch of other things that I just haven't had a chance to really do much on the computer aside from my regular 8-5. I will say that I am pretty glad to put 2011 behind us. I won't say it was a horrible year but it really wasn't the best. But I have high hopes for 2012! I've been thinking a lot about some goals I have and want to see myself working towards this year. And if I can stay focused and motivated, I think some great things can definitely happen!

I thought I'd share my Christmas card design. I didn't get to send out as many as I had hoped, but I guess that considering all that I had going on, I am pretty happy that I got anything designed in the first place! I was very tempted to go out and just buy a box of cards somewhere. But this little voice kept saying "Blasphemy! You're a designer! Not only that but a stationery designer!" So I made a point to come up with something to stuff a sock in the mouth of that little voice! LOL One thing that I will note about my design- I was so angry with all the commercialism around this year. It seemed so "in your face" this year and it drove me crazy. Commercials spit out gawdy jewelry commercials and tacky car commercials. And Best Buy probably had the WORST. Game On, Santa??? Really??? Shame on them!!! So anyhow, I was thinking about the Grinch and how he learned that there was more to Christmas than what he thought there was...more to it than one could buy from a store. So that's the direction I took. The inside of the card read, "May the true meaning of Christmas give you the strength and love throughout the year!"

In any case, I hope that everyone had a great holiday season! And I am happy to say that while I enjoyed every bit of mine, I am so very glad that it is OVER! LOL

Currently, I am working on a fun project for my daughter's 13th birthday. She has been bothering me for months that she wanted to have a Mustache party. I was going to let her have one around Halloween but that ended up not happening. So I promised she could have one for her birthday. We just finished up her invites tonight and I am in the process of creating stuff for her party. It's going to be so much fun! I am actually excited to see it all pull together! I will post pics from her party in a couple of weeks! Stay tuned!

Sundance Wedding: Kelly & Marvin

I recently went to Salt Lake City and helped a very dear friend, Kelly Parke, with her wedding. She was in the middle of moving from across the country among other things and had so much stuff going on, I offered to help with flowers and decor. Her colors were soft and pretty- peach, coral, eggplant with hints of blue and she loved the idea of incorporating lace into the details. Trying to save on the budget, I used various sizes of mason jars and wrapped lace around the top. It's amazing the versatility that mason jars offer! We used them for vases for flowers and also placed tealights in the smaller jars. They turned out so pretty! I also used paper doilies to make lacy buntings that hung by the cake table and also the hors d'oeuvres table. I loved these. Very simple, inexpensive but I think it really added that special touch. Kelly's bouquet and her attendants' flowers turned out gorgeous. I am really proud at how beautiful and fabulous they were. The groom and all his men sported pretty little boutonnieres, too. The cake was made by One Sweet Slice in Salt Lake City. They did a beautiful job. The cake was absolutely gorgeous! I had the nerve-wracking job of getting it safely to the resort. I was so worried it was going to tip over and was very relieved when we finally arrived at the resort and the cake was safely carried out of my vehicle and inside. Whew!

Kelly's mother could not attend the wedding due to health reasons, unfortunately, but because we live in such an awesome digital age, they were able to skype her in so she could watch as though she were there. I know it meant the world to my friend for her mom to be there and even though she couldn't be there in person, it was so nice to see that they were still able to bring her there virtually.

The ceremony and reception were fairly short but sweet. It was in a very beautiful location, at the Sundance Resort the with gorgeous mountain backdrops, the smell of crisp mountain air. I couldn't have picked a better setting! The only thing that I could have wished for was more time to have spent there! Kimber Tabor did the photography for Kelly & Marvin (no...these are not her photos because I am sure hers turned out far better than mine!) and I want to send a special shout out to everyone who was so great helping me set things up and tear things down, especially Dale, Amey, Tristan, Bekah, Neleigh, Jack, Jon and Kristal. Your help was very much appreciated and helped make the day magical for Kelly & Marvin! Thank you!!!

Don't be Angry! It's a Party!

So it's been awhile since I posted anything on here. (I know, I know...) But I have had one busy schedule and it seems as though my blog tends to get put on the backburner a lot.

Anyhow, I wanted to share this fun birthday party with you...my niece just turned 5 a couple of weeks ago and is totally into Angry Birds (but who isn't?! LOL) So she wanted an Angry Bird party. So I stepped in and helped make it happen! I designed the invitations for her party, made mini candybar wrappers, water bottle labels, goody bag tags....I found some free vector images off the internet for Angry Birds to help make it possible. My sister bought some cupcake toppers and liners from Etsy before I had the chance to really look into making them. Oh well...I printed them out and used a scalloped circle punch which worked really nice. The toppers looked cute on the cupcakes my sister made. (Who thought they looked very Christmas-y until everything was pulled together! LOL) I used the little green pig images for the mini candybar wrappers. They turned out so cute...a bowl full of naughty green pigs! I printed out a bunch of different birds and pigs at various sizes and hung them up along with balloons. Since the theme consists of pretty much primary colors, it was easy to find things like table cloths, napkins, plates and napkins, etc. to pull it together. For food, my sister and brother-in-law whipped up some yummy shish-kabobs and hot dogs and brats. We also served Green Pig Punch to the kids. My sister also bought a blue bird pinata that the kids were able to take a whack at and bust apart. I think it was a success!

It's Just FUN...

I haven't posted anything on my blog for awhile. I've just been so super crazy busy that I honestly haven't had a free moment to really get it done. And while I would love to write a novel about all the stuff I've been doing, things I have been working on, I really just want to keep this light and fun and try to get back into the groove of posting stuff...and I really want to try and incorporate work that inspires me, stuff that I love, information that I think is worth sharing, and so forth. With that said...I want to share some work by one of my favorite illustrators: Nate Williams (Note: the above image on the right side actually feels like my life right now if that helps you to visualize the craziness!!! I need to make it more like the image on the left side!!!)

I think that one of my most favorite things about Nate Williams' work is that its loose, free, and just plain ol' fun! I love looking at his work. I love how crazy it is, wacky and wild. I look at some of my little doodles and sketches and I can see how some of his work has reflected on me. I say that as a compliment to Nate, of course! Well, I hope it is a compliment....

Anyhow- it's Friday and it's mid-afternoon. I needed a break and this was perfect. I was actually looking at Nate's site and I found this image of the boy with the chalkboard relating to bullying. This gripped me because my own kids have had to deal with some bullying this year. Not on the physical or aggressive level but more on the emotional, psychological level. And no matter how it comes, bullying just, well, sucks. But I love this illustration by Nate Williams because it sort of turns things around and pokes fun at the mean bullies. (and I have to laugh and wonder but is it just me or do most illustrations of bullies always seem to portray these portly, freckle-faced, pig-nosed, snaggle-tooth boys with striped shirts? Just a funny observation...)

Gift Certificates

This last week, I donated some items to the Potter-Dix High School Music Dept. for a fundraiser that was held during a concert that they put on. Various items were raffled off. I donated 3 gift certificates valued at $20 each that ended up getting bundled with some greeting card sets and a few other misc. items. I have a feeling that because of the way that they were bundled with other items, the gift certificates weren't really noticed or taken into much account. So I wanted to mention something about it on here in hopes that whoever won the gift certificates will know this and will take advantage of them. I'd hate for them to be undervalued and tossed aside! So if you are one of the lucky winners, please contact me!

Duck, Duck, TWO!

This weekend is my niece, Christine's second birthday party. I can't believe she's going to be two! But then again, I can't believe that my oldest is sixteen! (yes...I said SIXTEEN. )

Anyhow...I just wanted to share this cute lil duckie invite that I made for Christine. Simple and sweet. I wonder how much her mom and dad would appreciate me bringing her a real duckie? Mwahahahaha...

Letterpress Fun @ Meadowlark Creative

I had the opportunity to attend a small letterpress workshop at Meadowlark Creative in Fort Collins, CO this past Saturday. I've been a longtime fan of letterpress and have been wanting to find someone near me that offered workshops or would at least allow me to visit and watch. I asked around and most of the places I contacted either didn't respond or I got emails suggesting I apply for an internship. Well, as much as I would love to do an internship, considering that I am a busy mom of four, work full-time and live 3 hours from the printshops that gave me the suggestions...it just isn't a feasible option for me. Luckily, when I found Meadowlark Creative and asked, they were much more receptive to the workshop idea. And when they scheduled workshops, they contacted me and let me know so I could jump in. And I did...and am I so glad of it!

Meadowlark Creative was receptive when I asked to use my own design work to create plates for the business card workshop I chose to attend. I revamped my design for my business card a bit and as much as I loved my previous letterpress cards, I really wanted to redo them for this workshop. My new cards were printed using a blind pass for the woodgrain and then a second pass in metallic purplish color. I really really love how they turned out. They're gorgeous!

And...I still want to get my very own letterpress shop and this workshop definitely enhanced that desire. In the meantime, I really do want to jump on any opportunity that comes my way (and that I can seek out) to do more hands-on letterpress work like this. I am so very grateful to Shelby at Meadowlark Creative for working with me on these cards. I am so thankful for this workshop that she put together and I really hope that I can work with her some more in the future. Okay, NOW I have iPad envy!

I will admit that I've wanted an iPad for quite some time. Well, since they came out, actually. But I just couldn't ever justify spending the money on what seemed like a big iTouch. I have an iTouch. Love it. It's my most favorite gadget I own. I use it every single day for so many different things. When I'm lazy and don't feel like sitting behind a computer at home, I'll use it to check email or social networking. But I use it for other things, too. Recipes, games, calculator, address book, to take photos (and I have a lot of different really cool camera apps!), even record videos. I also have my music on there as well as a few movies and tv shows. But even with the justification of how much I use my iTouch and how handy it is, I just haven't been able to bring myself to splurge on an iPad. One of the biggest drawbacks has been it's size. Why would I give up my handy iTouch that I can run with, stick in my pocket and go for something that would definitely be more cumbersome? I have relatives that own iPads. Even my mom has an iPad. The screens are bigger but other than that, to me they have just seemed like giant iTouches.

But lately, I have been hearing of more and more people investing in iPads to use at work with all of the new handy apps that are now available out there for multitude of things. People are using them to show portfolios. And today, I saw this video (below) of a guy using an app to sketch. And I mean REALLY sketch as if on paper...but with the functionality of a program like Photoshop with layers. There have been times where I have thought how handy it would be to be able to have "layers" in my sketchbook when I have tried something and wished I wouldn't have. There is no Ctrl+Z in a paper sketchbook. Wait, I take that back. There is...it's called an eraser. But there are times that even an eraser won't work. And it is THIS app...THIS functionality that has me sold. I want an iPad now. I have a multitude of sketchbooks laying around. I have never been one to use just one sketchbook and use it page by page to the very end. I've been more like grabbing a sketchbook, opening to a blank page and sketching. I have sticky notes and office memos with sketches and doodles all over. Wouldn't it be awesome if I were to utilize an iPad to take over? I could sketch on the iPad and if I want to take it further, I have it digitally ready....

The next dilemma...I need to start saving up now, don't I?!

Vegas Love, Love, Love...

I just recently finished up designs for a very old and very dear friend, Lisa and her fiance, Steve. They are getting married in Vegas in May but then having a big reception in June for most of those who would be unable to attend their Vegas wedding. (And as much as I would LOVE to go to their Vegas wedding, especially since I've never been there...I am going to be one of those who will have to help celebrate at their reception...) Anyhow- I am very honored that they came to me to design their invites for their special day as it really meant a lot to me!

The invitations and reception cards were designed to replicate playing cards. The designs feature fancy flourishes, a beautiful script font that is both elegant and sassy, and colors that are rich and vibrant. They are printed on a beautiful linen cover stock and trimed with rounded corners. I wanted to give the pieces a more sophisticated look and feel with the linen paper. I think that it was a perfect choice. The envelopes are French Paper Poptone in Razzleberry with customized labels to match the invitations.

"There's a Song in my Heart..."

A very near and dear friend of mine's son is soon to get married and I was very honored that they came to me to design their wedding invitations. I loved working on this set. I wasn't sure about how well the color combination would work without it being too hard-edged but I am really happy with the results. She's a music education major and he plays a guitar. I really wanted to create a set that reflected them as a couple. They really liked the idea of incorporating a tree with a carved heart into the design but also wanted to find a way to also incorporate music such as a guitar. I really wanted to make it a bit more playful and modern and incorporated fun use of type and colors. The invitations, response cards and reception cards were all printed on Neenah Classic Crest 100#C in Avon White. I chose this paper specifically for the quality I knew I could get from printing on it. I wanted the colors to be bold and vibrant and really stand out. I needed the design to look crisp and clean with sharp details. And I was not disappointed. I think that they are beautiful!

The envelopes are French Paper Poptone in Black Licorice. I created a wraparound label for the invitation envelope to match the design of the invitation. The smaller envelope for the response card has a standard label that I also created a coordinating design for.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Pillows

Well, not really "Deathly"- actually, I think that these are quite sweet. I am a huge Harry Potter fan and so I love these, naturally. I just really wish that I had a place I could put them! But how can I not mention them on here? I wish I had the skills to sew. I see stuff that would be so much fun to create...I am really good at coming up with ideas and I think that putting together concepts, patterns, etc. might not be so bad. It's the execution where I have to use a sewing machine, needles and thread where I fail. And trust me, it isn't without shame to my mom and grandma because I know that they tried...but let me draw it for you. That, I can do! ;)

Anyhow- these sweet Harry Potter themed pillows, featuring Harry, Ron and Hermione, were created by Pantoufle de Verry by Kim Gadbois. She has some other amazing pillows as well as original artwork on her Etsy shop as well. Thanks for bringing joy to this Harry Potter lovin' heart today. If I had one of those pillows, I'd squeeze it right now!

"Be my Passionista"

Okay- in order to uphold my promise to myself to try and keep up with blog posts and also because it is nearing Valentine's Day, I decided that I would share a pretty find. I ran across Meadowlark Creative awhile back when I was looking at trying to find someone somewhat "local" to me that offered letterpress printing and would be willing to show me a few ins & outs of the whole process. The gal that runs the show there was very open-minded at the idea of hosting a workshop...and I really hope she does because I'd love to make it.

Anyhow- I just wanted to share these with you...some awesome letterpress notecards and coasters made by Meadowlark Creative. They're very beautifully done. I love the doily/lace feel and the wittiness of the quotes. Perfect combo, in my opinion! If someone sent one of these to me, I'd definitely be their "passionista"! Champagne Wishes...

I decided to revisit some wedding invitations that I created several months ago and share. I was approached by a gal off of Etsy to create wedding invitations for pocketfolds. She had seen some Save-The-Dates that I had created and really loved the design so much that she wanted her whole invitation set created in it's fashion. Her colors were Chocolate Brown, Chartreuse and Cream. I am biased, I realize, but I really feel that the whole set turned out beautiful. I really wish that I could have been sent one so I could have an actual printed piece for my portfolio and to show others interested in my work, but I didn't get one. But that's okay....I have the original files and may try printing some just to have on hand for that reason. I really do want to build myself up more as an invitation designer and so I can definitely see the benefit of this. I absolutely love designing invitations and all the coordinating pieces to go with. It's the kind of work that I can work way into the early hours of the morning, go without sleep, food, etc. It becomes almost an obsessive thing. I love it THAT much. It gives me about as much pleasure as a day at a theme park...which I love.

Okay- so my next point is that I am currently working on some new designs for some new clients and I cannot wait to share! It's almost like waiting for Santa to come. I know I have to wait but I am so excited that there are moments where I want to burst! And there are moments where I just want to stare at my screen in adoration with what I've created and somehow imbed the design onto my eyes forever. Okay, okay, okay...that sounded pretty intense but I do love some of this stuff I've been working on and I hope that when I can finally share it with you, you will love it, too!

Follow the Golden Rule!

So I am really wanting to try and make an effort and post more on a regular basis...even if no one reads this, it helps me to think about things that inspire me and it's a shame I haven't been consistent in my posts in the past. I might have a treasury of goodness by now!

Anyhow- I ran across some awesome work done by Studio on Fire. I've seen their work before quite a few times and actually, I think I have mentioned them in a post before. But no mattah....I want to talk about them again. They inspire me.

I found this awesome print done in letterpress, a collaboration between a young blooming illustrator, Koen and his dad. I just love it. I love every aspect of it. It's a simple concept and illustrated quite well- a 6 year old totally understands the message! Definitely a print I'd love to have and hang up and hope to spread that same great message. The colors are bright and cheery. I also love the fact that this was a collaboration between a father and his young son...I love that the dad brought his son in on a project like this and was able to share his trade with him. I have worked with my kids on some projects in the past. My 14 year old son actually helped create the concept for my husband's logo for his construction business. And I know that when the subject comes up, my son is very proud of his contribution. Including kids in projects means so much to them and so I love seeing projects that are created with collaboration of children.

Peace, Love & Desserts...YUMMM!

When I saw the logo design for Peace, Love & Desserts when reading a newsletter from HOW Design, I couldn't help but fall in love with it. It is one of the winners from the 2011 HOW Logo Design Awards and I definitely agree that it was a good one to pick! I love the messy/organic look because it really does relate well to the kind of company that it is and also speaks well to the audience. It's yummy! I love the color choices for the design, as well. The company's website is a simple one-pager but it is really straight forward as far as what they offer. I'm sitting here practically drooling and close to licking my monitor. Okay, maybe not that far....but it all does look simply delish!!!! Why oh why can't they deliver to Nebraska? I want a cupcake now!!!!

Have Yourself a Happy, Letterpressed Year

How is this new year treating you so far? It's only a week in but I really feel that this year is going to be far better than 2010! So, what better to start the year off but with a new calendar? Out with 2010 and in with 2011!

I decided that I would share a letterpress calendar project that I was given a great opportunity to work on with 12 other designers from around the USA and also from Canada. We were each assigned a month to create an illustration for. The results turned out beautiful! My month was July- I created an illustration based of an image of my grandmother in her younger days. Most people think of fireworks, the Fourth of July...I wanted to try and bring some familiar associations but present it in a different way. I felt that it would be fun to focus on the image of a beautiful woman and give her firecracker status. Overall, this project was a lot of fun to work on and I really love each and every designer's illustrations. I am so very glad that I got to be a part of this project and hope that I can be included in future projects like this down the road!

How to Eat an Angry Bird

Okay. I couldn't help but to post this. I recently became an Angry Birds fan a couple of months ago and I won't lie, it's addictive! Whenever I found myself waiting around for anything, it seemed like I was completely obsessed with knocking out those green pigs with flying birds! A friend of mine posted a link on facebook for these edible cake toppers featuring Angry Bird characters, made by Artisan Cake Company and are available on their Etsy shop. These are so great, I'd hate to eat them, though! There are other great edibles for cakes & cupcakes featured on Artisan Cake Company's Etsy shop. I am making them a favorite!

Welcome, Welcome 2011!

I don't know about any of you but I am happy to welcome 2011 and try to put 2010 behind me. I'm not going to lie- while there definitely were some pretty awesome moments in 2010 that I will cherish for always, there were a lot of very trying and tough times for my family and I that I am happy to put behind us. A lot of big life lessons learned and while times were tough, I do feel that it did bring my family closer together and taught us some bigger morals in life and reprioritize a few things. And with that- I am actually very hopeful for what 2011 might bless us with!

I have to admit, I am not the most consistent blogger. I have proven that. But it isn't because I haven't wanted to, more that I haven't made it a priority over other things that consumed my life, especially in 2010. But I am going to give it an earnest try to be more consistent for 2011. I want to really put focus on not only things that I am doing but also things that interest me and inspire me, hoping that maybe it might be of interest to others out there...and also serve to inspire you as well.

As far as new things on my to-do list, I have one, possibly two wedding invitation ensembles to design and I couldn't be more excited! They're both for very good friends of my family and it's an honor that they have come to me with the opportunities to help make their days more special! I am also working on The Sketchbook Project and hoping I can get it all done in time and mailed/postmarked by the deadline.

In any case...it's getting rather late and I have to be at work tomorrow...Time to jump into the new year and ROCK IT! So I am gonna need a good night's sleep!!!

Re-Connected

So...we just recently moved and it actually was quite an ordeal. Little did I know until we moved in that the house was in a hole where, despite only being a mere few miles outside city limits, was a complete dead-zone. Spotty cell service and no internet. A guy actually mentioned "dial-up" and I threw up in my mouth. I've been spoiled by high speed wireless internet and I have been stomping around this place like a brat not getting her way. I just could not and would not accept it. With the technology that we have out there now...I just could not believe how impossibly hard some places made it sound. I got crazy thoughts of getting super long ethernet cords to string from town (we're talking roughly 5 miles of cord, no less...), selling an organ to pay for a tower to be put up where I could get signal from direct line of site (cuz for selling an organ, that tower would be in my back yard, of course), putting up a really super tall pole with pieces of tin mounted to it, Dr. Brown style (think Back to the Future) hoping for some super jiggawatts or whatever to beam me that magic internet connection....desperate thoughts, I'm telling you...desperate! There was quite a few mentions of satellite internet but I had heard about it being slow, dragging, having horrible restrictions, etc. I was told to avoid satellite internet like the plague. But finally, after several weeks of phone calls, begging, pleading, making people scout our location for any possibilities, tears of rage and frustration...I finally broke down and succumbed to the big and terrible satellite internet gods. It was not an easy choice. It really wasn't. There are two: Wild Blue and Hughesnet. Comparing apples to apples, and also the big fact that my sister actually works for the company (and yes, she is biased and kept putting it under my nose like a mom trying to get her kid to eat their brussel sprouts) I went with Wild Blue. The tech guy came out to my house and after a few hours of grueling setup time, mostly sitting around waiting for stuff to "connect" and sharing that idle small talk, I finally got hooked up! So far...so good. Granted, I did try setting up my wireless router and it doesn't seem to be cooperating...BUT other than that, I am actually pretty impressed with Wild Blue so far. It's not lightning fast like my high-speed wireless in town was like but it's really not horrible bad. Actually, comparing it to internet at work, it's quite decent.

So anyhow....now that I am done sharing with you my dilemma of getting "connected" I guess I should talk about a few other things going on. Now that the major stress of getting moved is done and we are gradually working at getting settled in our new place, I am ready to start getting back into the mode I was before the whole deal of moving took place. I was working on a new site redesign and I am still wanting to get that done but it was one of those things that had to take a backseat for awhile. While I would love to jump right in and get it done, realistically, I know it's not going to happen overnight. But soon. Very soon.

Other than that, I do have a fabulous couple to design Save The Dates, Wedding invites and all that goes with for. I am so very thrilled! I have known the groom since he was about 2 or 3 years old- it doesn't seem possible for him to be grown up and getting married already! But I am super excited about it all and have been fun playing with ideas for them.

I just recently picked up a job creating ads for a company that creates guides for airports around the country. I have worked on a few ads so far and have a few more to work on. I am really hoping that it proves to be consistent and reliable work. So far, so good! And it makes it possible for me to work from home in the evenings and weekends doing design work which is a way better opportunity than working at Walmart. (Which I did a stunt doing for a couple of months just to try and earn some extra money to put towards getting a few bills paid off, saving towards a family vacation and paying off that evil aunt Sallie Mae who I'll be paying off until I'm like 96 years old....) But I did learn some interesting things while working there....thinking designer-ly, I couldn't help but think about how horrible some package design concepts are when it comes to apparel. Socks & Underwear have to be the worst! And who puts children's pajamas in a thin cardboard box to hang up on a wall?! Actually, to be honest, I was quite surprised that those things didn't get massacred. I dreaded the idea of coming into work to find that a bunch of them had been dismantled. Fortunately, I saw only a few casualties while there. But seriously...the designer in me wasn't lost to the relentless folding and hanging that I experienced there. In some ways, I do feel that it helped me. I thought about new things that I'd never thought about before. I thought not only about the pretty container that something might come in. I thought about functionality. I thought about practicality. I thought about how well something might recycle. I thought about durability. I thought about organization....visual stimulus. For those things, I have no regrets whatsoever for my adventure as a sales associate. What I won't miss: the stink eye looks from customers, rude teenagers, the surprises of empty pregnancy test boxes stuffed amongst stacks of folded tee shirts or jeans, sunflower seeds spit all over the floor, having to argue with customers about trying on UNDERWEAR, etc. You've been to Walmart, I don't have to elaborate more. LOL

Anyhow- it is late and I am rambling. Perhaps not the most inspiring post. Maybe funny. Or sad. I guess it depends on how you look at it! But really, despite all the stuff that I have been through over the past few months, I have a lot to be greatful for. The "funny" stuff just enriches my soul and makes me stronger (or perhaps more crazy which is probably most true). Now that I have internet and I have stuff to keep the creative monster well fed for awhile, I suppose the spoiled little brat in me that stomps around throwing tantrums might sit in time-out for awhile. But dang, I am sure that my family will miss her.....

HOW Design Conference: Pre-Conf. Workshops

So, I decided to sign up for the pre-conference workshops at HOW Design Conference this year. It was like only an extra $50, so I figured, why not? A la carte, they were like $175 each so I figured it was worth the bargain. Originally, I had signed up for Splash of Flash and then the one on CSS. But the more I thought about it, the less I wanted to take the CSS workshop. I figured that what I needed to learn would have to be more extensive than what any 3-hour workshop could provide. I probably should have considered this with the Flash workshop, too, but decided to stick with it. I ended up taking the Splash of Flash workshop in the morning and then went to Chaos to Clarity workshop in the afternoon.

So here's the thing with the Splash of Flash workshop- at first, I was taking notes and trying to keep up with the speaker. There were a lot of really cool things that he showed us in Flash and it was enlightening to me considering that I'd never really done anything in that application. So there were a few "a-ha" moments where I felt that lightbulb go on. But on most part, I really felt that it got either too advanced for someone like me or that it ended up being more of a showcase for CS5 and a few other programs, which I do not have. And actually, before I took the workshop I had decided that I was going to make myself learn Flash and CSS via Lynda.com and so by the time I was done with this workshop, I really wish I would have chosen a different workshop to go to. For what I got out of it, I think that I would have benefited more doing something else. But that's just my own personal take on it.

I was actually really excited to be taking the Chaos to Clarity workshop. I had actually met the speakers: RaShelle, Judah and Eric the day before when Kelly and I were in the convention center getting our registration done. So I was really enthused after talking to them about their workshop and how it could help me as far as where to start making a business plan, setting goals, etc. We were paired up with a partner and had to ask each other questions throughout, getting to know each other and helping to realize some things that we might not have thought about before. The one thing that I really wanted to focus on with this workshop was ME and what I am passionate about- the whole reason why I chose to take this workshop instead of the CSS workshop. I rely heavy on my day job as it is what pays my bills but I have to admit that it's hard to feel passionate about a job where I feel as though my potential will never be realized. I'm tired of trying to fight my way up in the corporate world to a position that would earn me more respect within the company only to feel as though I just haven't made any real progress. I think that there are a lot of people within the company who still see me as the Data Admin Tech that I started out as way back when and don't realize or acknowledge that I actually have two degrees in art and design. So the idea of this particular workshop was very appealing to me. I am ready to get more serious about the kind of work that I am passionate about. In this workshop, I learned about creating a business plan with a vision statement, values and also a mission statement. I also learned about planning milestones and a road map for my career and the action steps, support structures, systems and resources to help make it happen. I even got up a couple of times to share my story and suggest a few things. I really felt that this was a very valuable workshop with what I not only was able to take away from it but also, hopefully, what I was also able to contribute to it. There was a drawing for a couple of one-on-one career coaching with RaShelle and Judah but I didn't win. But- I am seriously thinking about how I could find a way to get their input on a few things as I roll along. I think it'd be well worth it!

Day 1- HOW Conference: Dinner & Design

I can't believe that it's been over a week and I apologize for not posting this sooner...I've had one crazy week and getting some good computer time to do updates and such just weren't in the cards for me! But despite my lateness, I still want to post some great things I took away from my time in Denver at the HOW Design Conference. Even though conference didn't officially start for me until Sunday morning, June 6th, I made plans with a bunch of designer friends to meet up for dinner on Saturday night, June 5th at Wynkoop Brewery in downtown Denver. It was kind of crazy because I was riding with Kelly Parke from Parke Creative (she was staying with me at my sister's for the week) and the time on her clock was off and I was thinking we had plenty of time and were going to be there early. So I get this call from Cortney Christensen saying that he was already there waiting and I thought, "Wow- that guy's early!" When I mentioned it to Kelly, she laughed and informed me her clock was off and that was when I realized we were going to be there just-in-the-nick-of-time! Go figure...leave it to me to be fashionably late, right? But it was all good. We got there and found a nice gathering of old and new friends combined. Despite the place being rather warm and muggy (apparently they didn't believe it was hot enough there for air conditioning) it was still a really nice venue and their wait staff was top-notch and super accommodating. And for those who know me, I am not a beer drinking gal. I mentioned this to the waiter and decided to try a draft- he suggested one to me and it really wasn't all that bad. It was beer but it was probably one of the best tasting beers I've ever had. I just wish I could remember what it was called. Huh.
But anyhow- we had a lot of fun conversing about design. There were a few people who came to the dinner that weren't there for the HOW Design Conference but were there for the Creative Freelancer Conference, which is put on by the same people. So it was interesting to hear about what was going on with those sessions and such, too. Business cards were exchanged, the newest HOWiezine (HZ14) was passed around for everyone to see. It really was a great night and I am so very glad that so many people were able to make it!

Hiccups

Soooo...I am finally back from a long (but very fun) week in Denver! Unfortunately, I wasn't up to par on my website before I left, let my domain expire through google and was going to go with another company. There were issues with some sort of password and I also didn't switch over the DNS, either. So I was a bit stressed over all of that. And today, I just said "SCREW IT" and went back to my google domain and renewed. The other way was just too much for me to take today and I am feeling like a little impatient kid today. I want my site back up and running TODAY. And wouldn't you know...I go and renew my domain and that all seems good but then it's like taking forever for it to update and my site to be back online. My FTP wasn't playing nice...I was ready to throw myself on the floor and have a good ol' tantrum. Would it have solved anything? No. But, I might have felt a little better and probably would have freaked anyone out if they were around to witness it. But I tried one more time and VOILA! *happydance* It's all up and working again!

So, where is this new site redesign I've been talking about? Well.....I am working on it. Mona Lisa wasn't painted overnight by DaVinci, now was she? But anyhow- I am working on it and hoping that maybe some of the awesome stuff I have learned in the last week will inspire more goodness to be incorporated into it! I am going to be learning CSS and Flash very soon and am going to transform myself into one of those more desirable, well-rounded designers. It's time to get serious and stop wasting my time waiting on people who don't realize my potential. I'm ready to blaze my own trail...

Okay folks...I am in the process of moving over my domain to another location. It's in the works but this week, I am in the wonderful city of Denver attending HOW Design Conference and so it's a bit chaotic! I forgot all about needing to move over DNS to my new home until this morning- last week I was so busy trying to get a bunch of other things done and well...it's on my priority list for when I get back. So be rest assured that www.darcyleadesign.com will be back- it's just in umm..."transportation mode". haha

I have a new look I am implementing, working on a bunch of stuff and have learned a lot of things at conference here in Denver already that I am really excited about applying to my identity, my site, my whole business plan, etc. And I mentioned this before and so those who know me- right now, it's "spaghetti"...but I am working on making it more like "waffles". LOL So please stay tuned because there is good things to come and I am really excited about sharing them with you!!!

Away We Go!

I stumbled upon this beautiful letterpressed invitation set designed and illustrated by the bride and groom team, Jessie Turner and Tyler Thiessen, and letterpressed by Studio On Fire and....WOW, was I blown away! When I first saw this, I thought that it looked like it would have been more of a screenprinted design but when I found out that it was letterpressed, I have to admit that I was even more impressed! The illustration is beautiful and is balanced out well with the typographic details of the invitation. I actually really love the idea of showcasing their names with their parents in the way that they did- as if an introduction to their guests..."Ladies & Gentlemen: May we present...." It really ties into their fun theme- I LOVE IT!

I also really love Jessie & Tyler's wedding website. Everything flows so well. I love the photography of the couple- it shows such a fun and loving spirit between the two. I don't even know the couple but I'm in love! All of the pages of their site flows well from one page to the next, keeping a light and fun feeling throughout. It's obvious that this day is an important one to them but they also make it apparent that they want their guests to enjoy themselves on one of the most monumental days of their lives....a day to remember for all. I can't wait to see more about this wedding. This couple inspires me! Thank you, Jessie & Tyler for making the sun shine a little brighter for me today! WOW! :)

Graduation Reception Invitations

Graduation is still a couple of months away but I know it's going to be here before we all know it! This has been my son, Ethan's first year venturing into high school so he still has a few years to go before I have to worry about graduation. Yet, I know it is going to sneak up on me faster than I'll want it to! There are so many days that I look UP at him and wonder, "What happened to my moody little son that liked playing with toads and little green army guys?" Who knew those days would go by so quickly? I certainly didn't. I know there were many days I wished when he was younger that he could be more independent. And well, now I wish back for some of those days when he wasn't so...independent.

Anyhow- I know that people with high school kids are gearing up for Prom right now and have Graduation weighing heavily on their minds. Understandably so. They are big events in their children's lives. But that just brings me up to my point (and shameless advertising, too) that I've been thinking a lot about those graduations and the parties that follows and am working on designs for just the occasion. I don't know about anyone else but if my son were a senior this year, I am not entirely sure I'd know where I was having his reception party at until right about now or closer to graduation. (Yes, I know some people are better planners than me, but I know that there are a lot of people who are probably a lot like me when it comes to this aspect!) Maybe you're budget-conscious and don't want or can afford to spend an extra fortune just for reception invites (because after paying for senior portraits, graduation fees...if there are any, reservation for reception, invitations, cake, food, etc.....well, you get what I'm saying!LOL) Anyhow- these are great for those sort of instances. I plan to have a bunch more available on my Etsy shop in the next few days and weeks...OH and be sure to check out other invitations/announcements that I have available! If there is an occasion that you are planning and needing invitations or announcements for....(hint, hint, hint!)

Time for a new look....

Yeah, I know...it's been awhile. But I decided the other day that it is time to get back into the swing of things and start becoming more productive and start putting those creative abilities into motion. I've been working on some stuff for my etsy site and been pushing to get stuff up on there. Check it out when you get a chance! I also decided that I wanted a new look for my blog. So I went and updated the overall look as well....still a work in progress....but at least I found that motivation to get it done!

Well, it's been a crazy, busy past couple of months! Once again, I found myself putting my blog on the backburner for football games, Boy Scouts, Christmas concerts, cookie baking, etc. But hopefully, I can get back on track and do a better job!

I haven't really pushed myself to create a whole lot lately. There has been so much stuff going on that there are times that I come home from work and just want to pass out on the couch. I am sure you know what I am talking about, right? But in any case, that doesn't mean that I don't have ideas and haven't thought of stuff that I DO want to create!

A friend of mine recently asked me to design some belated Christmas cards. It's really a great idea as so many of us have been so crazy busy that getting those holiday cards out in time seemed to be low on the list of priorities this last year. And it's not because we didn't want to get them out, just that Christmas snuck up on us way too fast! So, a night of playing, I came up with a fun, punchy design.

I am working on getting a few more seasonal designs done for Valentine's Day and also St. Patty's Day. I'll post when I have more to share! Hope you all are having the start of a wonderful day, a wonderful week!

My Bedroom of Dreams...

It is by happy chance that I stumbled accidentally upon Shawn Lovell's site this morning and totally fell in love with her work. She works with metal creating functional pieces of art that are just absolutely gorgeous! So for the time wandering her site, looking at her portfolio, I escaped reality for a moment and imagined my bedroom at home being finished and furnished by some of her fine work. Taking a nap right now sounds absolutely blissful. After a late night working on a project, I definitely could use a few more hours of rest. But how sweet my dreams would be to sleep on that whimsical tree bed...I want it so badly.

Paired with the bed, I think that the bird chandelier would also look awesome.

And I know that it's a wine room door, but I was thinking how beautiful this would look if it could be designed as french doors that enter into my bedroom. It just completes the picture in my head.

Natural colors with jewel-colored accents...I'd be in heaven! If I am sleeping, please don't wake me. I'm loving this dream I am in.....

Sending HOPE In The Cards

I don't know what I was doing, why today is the first day I have heard of this but I think it's too cool not to share with others! This is the Week of Hope, from Sept. 1st-7th. I heard about this awesome site that is all about sending HOPE called Hope Is In The Cards. It's about encouraging people to send out handwritten letters or cards, offering messages of HOPE. And actually, there are a lot of retailers out there (find one near you!) that are supporting this cause, offering free postage. And if that isn't awesome enough, Cardstore.com is also offering a special promotion until Sept. 8th that allows you to send a personalized card to someone FREE. How can you beat that?!

And you know, in these dark times that so many have had to face, it's hard to have hope and see that light at the end of the tunnel. And when you are faced with things like trying to figure out where to come up with the money to pay the mortgage payment, buy food so that your family can eat, have utilities so that you can have things like a running fridge, showers, lights and heat...it can be tough to find optimism and keep faith. When I have on my own worry hat, it's hard to think about anything else. So I think it's so important to share with others how much they mean to you, how important they are, share with them the things that you see in them that make them shine!

Yesterday, I received a copy of home, paper, scissors by designer friend, Patricia Zapata, and I am telling you...I am blown away! I was on my lunch break from work and could not put the book down. I was hypnotized from front to back, amazed at all the great, fun projects that are tucked within. It actually made me think how fun it would be to play hookie from work for the rest of the day so that I could have a secret love affair with a paper craft project!

Patricia not only provides a lot of great paper craft ideas but gives good instruction on how to complete them, including supplies needed and approximate time it takes to complete them. Another thing that Patricia included, that I really do appreciate, is a description of different papers. It's very informative to those that are not only a novice to paper crafting but even a helpful guide to those who aren't.

And if you are budget conscious, these are actually really affordable crafts to make for gifts. I know of a couple of events coming up where some of these ideas could really be fun and cost effective to make. And Christmas will be here before we know it!

An Invitation a 15 year old Might Approve of...

My oldest son is turning 15 in a few weeks. It doesn't seem possible at all. Where did that time go? Seriously. He's now at the age where looking cool and impressing people seems like an important aspect of his life. He's now officially in high school and a football player. So he's automatically grandfathered into a cool club he thinks. LOL Oh if only it were that easy...

Anyhow- I have been horrible about keeping up on this blog, posting consistently. I have also been a slacker of the creative realm. Doesn't mean my creative brain isn't going non-stop. Just that I haven't made time for myself to develop some of those cool ideas into something more tangible. Such a shame. Such a waste. However, I am wanting to improve upon that. I need to.

I was feeling as though I needed to work on something just to jumpstart things again. Or try. Other than some doodle-cards I need to work on for an exchange I signed up for, I really didn't have anything else to work on. Well, let me rephrase that...I had stuff to work on, but just haven't. That's sort of a long story that I'll work out for later. But anyhow- I was thinking about any birthdays or holidays coming up very very soon that would call for a quick and fun invite or greeting and realized that my son's birthday is coming up....We're not doing anything major this year. Just going to get some pizzas, have cake and ice cream and that sort of thing. Really laid back. But still, I figured that it would be a good excuse to come up with something, right?! Why not? So I had fun playing with type and whipped up something that a 15 year old would approve of. (And believe me, if he didn't like them, he'd let me know! LOL)

Several months ago, I blogged about some Taylor Swift themed birthday party invitations that I designed for my daughter's 10th birthday. I learned to never underestimate the power of blogging from that particular post! There have been a lot of times that I would often wonder how many people really do read my blog, if anyone reads it at all. So you can only imagine my shock when I was contacted about my post and given the most awesome opportunity to take my daughter and the rest of my family to meet Taylor Swift and go to her concert in Cheyenne, Wyoming during Frontier Days on July 23rd! If you read my post about the invitations, you can only imagine the excitement my daughter had when I was able to share the news with her! But what little girl wouldn't have been excited, right?! It was the most awesome gift for my daughter's birthday and I wish I could properly thank the people that gave us the opportunity.

It seemed things worked out so that my daughter could invite a friend to go with us to the concert. My oldest son went to New Orleans with our church youth group before the concert and didn’t get back until after. So, it just worked out that the rest of our family and my daughter’s one friend could all go. My daughter was so happy she could take a friend to share the experience with- I designed a fun poster for them to have signed by Taylor. When we were standing in line waiting to meet her at the Meet & Greet before the concert, the girls were worried that they might not be able to get the posters signed. My daughter was so nervous…so worried that her brothers were going to embarrass her (brothers usually do! LOL) But she was also ready to just burst with excitement. Taylor seemed to really like the girls' posters and she also signed a couple of the invitations that I made that the boys were wearing. My daughter had a million questions to ask Taylor and I am sure that if we had been able to spend more time with her, she probably would have had her ear talked off! LOL

While we were standing in line, a woman passed by me, patting me on the arm and said, “Hey, Mom!” It wasn’t until after she had passed that I realized that it was Taylor’s mom. I wish that I could have been able to talk to her a little bit. Considering that I am a mom of a girl who has big dreams, it would have been really cool to talk to her. But sadly, I missed that window of opportunity. Perhaps there will be another time?!

We were able to have a group photo taken with Taylor and it turned out awesome- we're definitely going to cherish it forever! I wish we could have gotten a shot of the girls alone with Taylor, too. But for what time we did have with her and the opportunity that was given to us- it's far more than what we could have ever asked for! Taylor is such a sweet girl in person, too. I mean, I am sure she hears from fans about how great she is, how beautiful, how talented (and she truly is!) but she shows such affection and gratefulness to her fans as well. It's no wonder that so many girls like my daughter look up to her and are inspired by her. She's really an amazing girl and I am so happy for her, for all the success that has come to her!

After the Meet & Greet, we went to the concert- There were a few issues and we did quite a bit of running around to get into the concert, but we finally managed to get in! The girls got their prized Taylor Swift tees and had the best time ever! Luckily, where we were, there was plenty of dancing room! It turned out to be one of the best days ever for the kids! Huge thanks to Taylor Swift, her managers and everyone else involved in helping make this an awesome experience for all of us! It’s a memory that we’ll all have for the rest of our lives. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!

HOW Design Conference 2009: Events

Everyone seems to anticipate the opening keynote at conference and the craze for swag when the doors to the resource center open. You pretty much need to pack an extra suitcase in order to haul all of that swag back home unless you decide to ship it home instead (which is probably the smarter way to go considering most airlines make you pay for your luggage to ride the plane now, too.) But I have to say that compared to the last two years of attending the conference, it felt like there were fewer vendors and they weren’t as generous with swag as years before. But honestly, I really wasn’t interested in bringing home every piece of swag that I could possibly get. In fact, I was a bit more choosy this year as to which vendors I wanted to stop at. Yes, I did come home with buttons, posters, stickers, notebooks, pens and cool paper shutter shades. But I think that the highlight swag item for me was “Full-Bleed” from Veer. (I have wanted her since before Christmas. And so, when they were handing her out with “Megapixel”, I was only focused on getting her. It was the highlight of my night at the Resource Center!) There was a photo booth set up by Shutterstock but I completely missed out on it! I don’t know how or why I did, but I did. But hopefully they’ll have it back next year!

A new event for HOW this year was the Designer’s Market Place. A friend and I decided to go in together and share a table to sell our goods. I took in greeting cards and calling card sets while my friend and roommate, Kelly Parke, had her Con Survival Kit. I was really surprised by the mob of people that gathered and came to shop the Market Place. I felt that I did well and learned a lot from the experience. I have a better idea of what to expect for next year- what seemed to be most popular as far as my work goes, ideas for table displays, quantity of items, new ideas for other products to offer… Oh and a very big lesson- make sure I have plenty of change on hand!!! I did get a chance to venture off and look at a few other tables. I could have easily spent all the money that I made that night! My purchases? Some buttons and bookmarks from Melissa Ivone-Morris of Operation Nice, two beautifully illustrated cards by , and a numbered, limited-edition tee from Steve Gordon. But I definitely could have spent a lot more! (There were some awesome booths that offered Letterpress- so yummy….I was so very very tempted!!! I did get contact info from a few so they might be hearing from me in the future!) Overall, I was really happy with the turnout- it seemed to have been a great success!

I was also tapped this year to be a reviewer at the Portfolio Review. I was very honored to have been selected- it was only a couple of years ago that I, myself, was showing my work at the portfolio review…nervous about how my work would stand up to others, what sort of comments I would receive, etc. I actually learned a great deal from that experience. I won’t lie, you can’t go into it with thin skin. And if you do, you have to learn quickly to “cowboy up”. But at the same time, it isn’t the reviewer’s job to only see and point out flaws. It tears down self-confidence, makes a person question their abilities and ultimately, leaves them feeling like crap. A good reviewer is one who will take the time to look at a portfolio and notice the strengths the person has, the good qualities of the work being shown, how it is presented, and also making suggestions and ideas to possibly help show the work from a different perspective and show a path for improvement. Last year, when I attended the portfolio review, I was just finishing up my degree and was working on a portfolio class. I had literally torn it apart and was trying to decide on how to recreate it so that it had a polished, professional look to it yet also reflect my own personal touch. Well, while at the portfolio review in Boston, I noticed a sea of black portfolios. But among those black portfolios, there were some individuals who had done something different and I noticed that those were the tables that seemed to gain the most attention. Not discounting the work that was put into all the others that were out there. I am sure there were diamonds among them. However, it was obvious that those who did something different really did stand out. This year, in Austin, I am not sure if the number of people participating in the review was down because attendance was down. Perhaps it was a bigger, more spacious room. I’m not really sure- but I didn’t notice so much of the “black sea” of portfolios this year. They were there but it just didn’t seem as obvious, I guess. In any case, I went in with my little reviewer badge that sported my name on it and met up with some very talented designers on the floor. I hope that those that I spoke with were able to gain value from what I discussed with them, to go on to bigger and better things. Perhaps one day we’ll see their name in lights and I’ll be able to say, “I remember meeting them way back when…” You never know! I know that I learned a lot from the experience and for that, I am grateful.

And how can I forget to mention the Closing Party?! This year’s theme was “Keep Austin Weird”, which coincidentally, is also Austin’s slogan as well! I had the pleasure of walking to the party with the Hoops & Yoyo gang: Bev Carlson, Bob Holt and Mike Adair. And let me just tell you, these guys are off the hook, crazy party animals! Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating for entertainment purposes... But they really are a bunch of fun people to talk to and hang out with. It was nice connecting with them on a personal level because it made me realize that these people who are the creators of animated little characters that so many people idolize…even they have chaotic normal lives like me. Well, when I say normal, I mean well….chaotic....But, anyhow….I think you know what I mean! I had a lot of fun checking out everyone’s costumes at the party. I must say that there were quite a few very creative ones out there. Me? Well, maybe not so creative…I wore a funky patterned sundress and put my hair in cute little ponytails. I looked very “country”. The only thing missing were some cowboy boots and a chicken. We'll just leave it at that!

I always enjoy the closing parties at the conference. It gives you a chance to meet up with people you met while there, cut loose a little bit and just have a great time! I think everyone anticipates what the theme will be in order to come up with cool costume ideas. I am wondering what the theme will be for Denver? hmmmmm........

HOW Design Conference 2009: Sessions

You know, for the first few days or so after the conference, allowing more to be absorbed, I have to admit that I had this feeling of disappointment in some of the sessions that I attended. There were a few that I really had been ones that I staked high interest in but ultimately felt disappointed in them for not living up to my expectations. And unfortunately, I ended up walking out on those. It happens. Not saying that they were horrible sessions or there wasn’t benefit in what the speakers had to offer because I know that isn’t true. I’m just saying that for some of the sessions that I walked out of, it was more about the fact that it was information that really didn’t apply to me nor the direction that I desire to go in. I do wish I would’ve attended some of those freelance sessions given by Peleg Top and Ilise Benun. In the chaos of trying to keep my schedule straight, I forgot all about those sessions and honestly, there wasn’t anything printed in our booklet about them (unless I missed something?) and I don’t even remember seeing any signs for them. But that could have been my fault for not being more observant, too. (There were moments that I could probably say that my personal theme was “Lost in Austin”. Stories to entertain, for sure, but perhaps for another time…) But in any case…I am going to move onto the good stuff now-

I did attend quite a few sessions that really did knock my socks off. I really enjoyed sessions that provoked my creative brain to explore ideas, made me look at things in a different perspective and really did leave me feeling inspired. I won’t lie- those speakers that were engaged with their audience, they threw out entertaining videos, made us dance, threw glitter on us, wore clown noses, offered up prizes of lil ninja dolls and cool posters or made us go out to promote our favorite PMS colors (and for one of my roommates benefit- “VOTE FOR PMS-580…Going KINDA Green” LOL)...Well, we’re a bunch of creative designers (or well, I like to think so) and so we’re easily distracted by these things. We are like a bunch of preschoolers that just want to pick up a book to look at the pretty pictures. We like hands-on stuff. We want to “ooooh & ahhhhh”. But it’s also through these methods that we learn and allow that inner child to come out and play. It’s by allowing the freedom of creative thinking to make the impossible ideas become reality. Yet, at the same time, we are also in need to learn how to deal with difficult clients, learn or improve skill sets, become more business oriented, improve leadership skills, become a better team player, learn to write better (and hopefully without typos…oh, I do hope you’ll forgive me…), learning how to promote and market yourself in these crazy economic times and of course…networking.

Regardless of those sessions that I couldn't jive with, the ones that I did enjoy really did make up for it! Once again, I left the conference inspired, motivated with new ideas, more knowledgeable in areas that I wasn't as knowledgeable in and feeling more connected then ever before! So would I say this justifies the expense for next year's conference? You betcha!

(And just in case you didn't know...next year's conference will be in Denver June 6-9, 2010!)

HOW Design Conference 2009: Networking

First and foremost, I have to say that one of the most awesome and powerful experiences that you will gain from attending conferences such as HOW Design Conference are the networking opportunities. The conference provides networking opportunities such as the Networking Lunch (great for new conference attendees) and a Networking Kickoff that takes place before the conference officially begins. It allows people to meet and mingle with others, share information, experiences, contact information, etc. It’s also a great way to make new designer friends to hook up with and attend sessions, make lunch dates, shopping excursions, site-seeing and not to mention fun after-conference events that you wouldn’t experience otherwise. At the end of the conference, not only do you get to go home with a giant stack of cool designer business cards and names and numbers loaded into your phone (and not to mention all the twitter follows), but you also go home knowing that you made some great friends who are also going to understand and support you on the business end as well. And personally, I can attest to this- I met a gal at last year’s conference in Boston and from there we were able to form a friendship and collaborate on a project that actually paid my way to this year’s conference. So right there is proof that networking at conference can be very beneficial!

I also have to throw out this little toot for the HOW forums- When I decided to attend my first conference, considering that I didn’t know anyone that would be there, I decided to venture into the conference forum-land. And I have to say that it was one of the best things I ever did, especially where networking is concerned. The forums provided some familiar names to meet up with at conference. I was able to not only meet some of these online buddies but I also found a roommate that year (which substantially helped save $$$!) Plus, it also gave me so many opportunities to join in on fun events that took place outside the conference. And many of these people that I have met on the forums, I consider good friends to this very day. More than that, I’d even say they could be considered family, in a sense. As my friend and fellow HOWie, Patti, would say, “I LOVE MAH HOWies!” And honestly, if I couldn’t find a way to afford going to the conference itself, I’d try hard to come up with the money so I could see my HOWie friends. They’re THAT awesome!

HOW Design Conference 2009: Just getting started!

HOW Design Conference June 24th – June 27th, 2009: Austin Texas
(Over the next week, I am going to touch on different aspects of the conference! There's just no way that I can squeeze it all into one short blog. I'm just way too long-winded for that!)

If you have ever been to a HOW Design Conference, then you can totally understand and appreciate how fast paced and exciting it can be! This year was no exception! I have been slow in getting this posted because I really have wanted to think about the conference and absorb all the information that I learned while there. Plus, I really wanted to justify this post with information that is worthy of sharing with others, that is also beneficial to them and not just a “show and tell”. I could share all the pictures I took with you and prove that it was a good time. However, I don’t think that they would provide much justification or could prove ROI with your company or clients (or even with yourself if you are one of those lucky ones, like myself, who have self-paid) without explanation (or sharing other experiences not photographed) to show how beneficial conferences like this can be.

First topic will be covering Networking. This is a very important topic when it comes to attending a conference as its about meeting others in the field, having conversations about experiences, asking advice, etc.

Off to Austin I go!

So, it's been a crazy couple of months...between baby showers, birthday parties, school functions, camp, etc. I sometimes wonder how I keep my sanity. But...as my mom always said, "You can't lose what you never had!" So, I guess it's all good! LOL

Anyhow- I have spent the last few days helping my two oldest sons pack for camp this week, work on the mountain range of dirty laundry that has piled up and also work on stuff for my upcoming trip to Austin.

Tomorrow, I am leaving for Austin to attend the 2009 HOW Design Conference! I honestly didn't think I was going to be able to attend this year. There are so many who aren't able to go this year due to economic issues, mostly, and so I am feeling very lucky to be able to go this year! I worked on a project several months ago with a friend that I met at the HOW Design Conference last year. She had a great idea and asked me to do illustrations for her on the project. And it is because of that project that I was able to fund this trip. Well, 3/4 of it, anyhow! There is a Designer's Market Place this year, which allows designers such as myself, to set up a booth and sell our goods. I didn't get done as much as I had hoped, but I am planning on taking greeting cards and calling cards, at least. Hopefully they'll get some buzz and I'll be able to make so extra fun spending cash while I am there! And it will give me the experience to know what to expect for next time I decide to set up a booth anywhere. I can be better prepared...I hope! I was also asked this year to be a reviewer at the portfolio review at the conference. This is a huge honor and I am so glad that I get to be a part of it and see some amazing work that I know is out there! And it's a great time to network, as well! You just never know where a connection might lead you....could land you an illustration job to pay for the next year's HOW conference!

Oh and of course the crazy fun that goes with it all....Smitcat will not disappoint and has plans for some awesome pubcrawls starting tomorrow night! Granted, I'll be getting in rather late to Austin, but perhaps I'll be up to having some crazy fun once I get to the hotel. Who knows! I am planning on going and getting a henna tattoo while I am there. A designer friend of mine gave me a referral to a henna artist and so that is what I am planning on doing after the Designer's Market Place and right before heading off to Lanai Lounge for Smitcat's Thursday night pubcrawl. I am really excited about this- the gal is so nice and I am thinking that she's probably the kind of gal that I could spend hours upon hours talking to like long-lost friends. And she makes and sells hoolas and so I am actually considering buying one to bring home. Could be interesting! Friday night is the closing party at the conference. The theme of the party is "Keep Austin Weird", which oddly enough IS Austin's slogan, it seems. So I am thinking that hitting up funky vintage shops on SoCo on Wednesday will help me decide on costume ideas. I think it will be a lot of fun! There are like three other things that I really want to do while in Austin: Barton Springs, Alamo Drafthouse and also watch the bats! Gotta see the bats, right?!

So anyhow...I hope to be inspired and come back revived and pumped, ready to go! I am in such big need for a creative retreat! I can't wait!

Even though this is late to post, I wanted to share pics from my sister's baby shower last month. I can't believe that it's already been that long ago, but sure enough...time flies! Her baby shower turned out great- the only downer was that the weather wasn't so cooperative. I had wanted to do it outside but because of rain, we opted to stay inside.

Busy Days!

So, it's been far too long since I last updated my blog. How shameful. But it's been absolutely crazy for me in the last month! My sister had another baby girl last month, Christine Carolyn, born on April 25th. So, I went to Denver so I could help welcome baby Christine into the world and also entertain her big sister, Sara Mae. But the arrival of Christine also meant birth announcements and baby shower invites to make. (I decided to throw her a baby shower so that my grandparents who can't make it to Denver would be able to see and love on her.) On top of that fun, I have also made birthday party invites for another person, got calling cards printed, packaged up and taken down to the local coffee shop that my work is featured in...I also made some invites for a going away party for one of my son's friends. (And talk about last minute! He brought me the information on a Tuesday and the party was that following Friday! But despite the short notice, the party turned out to be a huge hit.) We have had concerts and awards nights and track meets in the last month. It's been crazy!

This weekend is Memorial Day Weekend...I am throwing the baby shower for my new niece tomorrow afternoon at my home. I decided to go for a very whimsical theme. Rather than telling you of all the details about it, I'll be taking pictures and posting on here so you can actually see. (Plus, as much as a time crunch I am under now at this point, I'd hate to mention something I planned on doing and then not be able to do it or it not turn out as I had hoped!) I know it is going to be absolutely beautiful, though! I am actually very excited about pulling it all together. This week has been nuts, though! We have been going through a bunch of stuff that we have accumulated over the last 16 years in boxes and totes and such and so we have all been scrambling to get it finished and the house clean for a good share of this week. Talk about rush job! Sheesh! But this weekend really did sneak up on me faster than I expected! I am sitting here right now in shock that it's almost June! Holy Moly!!!! But in any case, I know that we'll get stuff done and everything will turn out beautifully, so I really shouldn't stress myself out over it. Things will turn out the way they're supposed to.

I Think I Have a Crush on Paper-Source...

So I got this email from Paper-Source today notifying me of new products. I just recently bought those delish envelopes from them and signed up for emails. So I go to the website just to check it out for fun...why not, right? Oh my goodness! Do they have some stylish & witty things on there! (And when I was buying envelopes, I was so focused on just the envelopes and paper that I didn't even venture anywhere else on the site, really...but that was probably a wise mistake on my end considering that I was sitting there with my debit card in hand!)

Check out this witty coin purse! Now that's a fun way to say "Stick It" to this economy...with style and pizzaz, of course!

I also love this tote made from disposable shopping bags- not only are you repurposing those bags, it's also a very fun, bright and colorful bag for all your shopping adventures!

Having probably dozens of scattered sketchbooks, journals and such around the house, well, there's always room for one more! I love the message on this one!

And of course, I really like the idea of this fun chalkboard! What a fun way to leave notes and reminders and such!

A Party that Alice Cullen Would Approve Of...

I have been looking at Hostess with the Mostess™ blog for awhile...love all the fun and creative ideas that she has on there for parties. (And I wish that I would have stumbled upon her site before my daughter's birthday because I could have used that inspirational boost to really play up the invitations that I made for her...but the good thing is that there is always NEXT year, right?!) I am also working on ideas for a baby shower, or maybe I should call it a Sip 'N See, for my sister and her new baby that should make her debut into this world anyday!

I don't know how many of you reading my blog are Twilight fans, but I definitely am! I absolutely love the books! I was feeling a little lost without having any Harry Potter books to look forward to, so this book series definitely quenched my thirst!

I have been thinking how awesome it would be to throw my own Twilight party but right now, we're going through about 12 years of boxes and totes...it's been long long overdue, and so I have no idea where I would have it! But I wanted to pass this along because it's just a great idea! If you end up throwing one of these Twilight parties, will you please invite me????

Summer/Fall Color Palette

So I went and decided on a color palette to work with for my Summer/Fall colors. I guess, traditionally looking at the colors, you might think that they'd be more typical for Spring/Summer, right? Well, not so...at least not from how I am looking at it, anyhow! The top row of colors are the main colors for my palette. (I just ordered envelopes yesterday from Paper Source PS Collection/Waste Not Paper....Blossom, Papaya, Beet, Pool & Chartreuse- LOVE those colors! Plus, they come from a company that is green conscious!) The second and third rows are for accent colors, in the event that I need to add additional colors to give depth, dimension or any added details to the main color used. I am really excited to finally have this step done so that I can move on to the next step: sketching and working on illustrations!

With this line, I plan to create the following:
Greeting Cards
Stationery/Note Sets
Calling Cards
Invitation Sets
Recipe Cards
Small Notebooks
Fun Parent/Teacher Forms

I'd also like to create some fun things like buttons, magnets & pushpins...things that surely come in handy when going back to school or organizing your office space! I might even get creative and decide to paint some coordinating message boards as well....how fun would that be?!

Shame on me for this impulse buy, but what a purchase it is, don't you agree? I saw the pattern on this purse, the style and the price and decided to buy it. Granted, I am sure that my husband is going to be scowling about how many purses I already have (and I know that I don't have as many as some people I know...) But I just LOVED this! This is made by fromnancy: Creating Things on Etsy. There are a lot more fabric choices and bag styles on her shop to choose from. But this is the one I just had to have. It's just so inspirational and don't you just dig the colors?! WOW- I do!

So, I've been working on a few things lately- for both my Etsy shop as well as for a local retailer that just started carrying my stuff. (In fact, I delivered goods to them today!) But I have so much more to do, it's crazy! But I am also really excited about it! While I am starting to establish myself as a stationery designer, I am working on plans to do more. If you have kept up with my blog, I am sure that this is just redundant (sometimes I'm just that way!) But anyhow, I plan to create lines that feature specific color palettes, fun illustrations and various products that will be geared towards the season. There will be things like greeting cards, stationery sets, calling cards and such that will be carried in each line but there will be more! Much more! (Please help the sanity of my family as I open my mouth wide for such a GIGANTIC bite! But no worries because this all has to come in baby steps. But I WILL get there!)

I just ran across this company called Metromint....water with mint! Of course, being a mint fan, I had to investigate. Sadly, there aren't any retailers here who carry their products for me to try, however I do know of a local retailer who might consider it if I suggest it. If not, I guess I'll have to either order online or the next time I am in Cheyenne, I'll have to make a point of finding some and picking it up! If you are like me and enjoy mint, this might be something worth trying. For me, mint is so relaxing, so calming and refreshing. I also have to say that I really like their website- it's clean and easy to navigate. Their product design is also simple, clean and eye-catching. Even if I had not heard of this company and their products, if I were to see these bottles on a shelf or something, I'd probably be interested enough to buy it! I really really want to try out the spearmint!!! (And they have a Fan Club you can join, too!)

New things...

Well, first of all, I am happy to say that I am officially a seller on Etsy.com! (Check it out- darcylea design Etsy Shop!)I don't have much on there right now but at least I have a few things up. And, I do plan on getting more to put on there. I am just so happy that I have finally launched this and am doing more of what I love. It's an awesome thing!

I thought I would mention on here a few things that I plan to change on my blog. I really want to put more work into it, organizing everything and making the functionality more appealing. I am even considering dumping my current portfolio site and integrating it more into this blog. And then I'd like to create a blog or site, possibly, dedicated to my stationery design...that is, once I have more to show and sell, etc. The ideas are definitely there and I do need to work out a plan in order to make it happen. I'll get there!

HOW Design Conference: Market Place and a Few Other Mentionables

For quite a few months, I had been hoping that there would be some way for me to attend the HOW Design Conference this year, which is being held in Austin this coming June, but I wasn't sure that it would be possible. I have gone for the past two years and have had to pay 100% of it out of my own pocket. I have to admit that while I am glad that I have had the opportunity to go, I can't help but feel some envy for those who have been able to ride on the corporate dime. But at the same time, I also feel that this is an investment that I am making in myself...and because of that, I feel committed to getting as much as I possibly can out of the conference and finding some way to apply it. I can honestly say that I feel that I have come a long way since the first time I attended the conference. I am now done with school and focusing more on some goals I have set for myself that I want to accomplish. I won't say that I am there yet, but I am closer to reaching them now than I was a couple of years ago and even a year ago. I think I have more focus on what I really want to do and a roadmap as to how I might be able to get there. My biggest issues are procrastination and biting off more than I can chew most of the time. But I think that I am getting better....

Anyhow, the point of this post was really to talk about how I WILL be able to go to the HOW Design Conference this year and will be participating in the Designer's Marketplace with my designer friend, Kelly Parke. (Read our interview here!) Kelly and I worked on a project together over the past several months and will be setting up shop selling the kits there. (You can also find out more information about the kits here.) I will also be selling stationery and some other misc. stuff at our table, as well.

I also started setting up my Etsy shop last night and even though I still have more to do, I am feeling as though I am starting to get some place and getting closer to some of the goals I have set for myself. It's exciting! I plan to get some stuff listed this next week, so if you have a chance, check it out! I have been working with just some random illustrations that I have done but I am going to start focusing on things like color palettes, bringing in some textile to my work, creating not just cards but stationery sets, timeless calendars, memo pads, notebooks, etc. I'm telling you...I have big plans!!!!

My New Favorite Mug!

Okay, I have to rave about some awesome mugs that I just purchased from CurlyGirlDesign.com recently. I just got them in the mail today and I am SO loving these mugs, TOTALLY! I bought one for my sister, who is one of my best friends. I would love to buy another friend of mine one, as she is very much like a sister to me. I just love how awesome the mugs are....from the bright and bold colors to the fun illustrations and the varied layers of textures and patterns. How can one NOT love these, right?! (And I have heard that there will be some water canteens offered in the near future as well. As much as I love my current water bottle, I might just have to replace it in the very near future!!!) I planned to give this awesome follow up to my previous post which was over a month ago, but I have to admit, I really wondered how I would do it. It's way overdue and I do apologize! One really awesome thing that happened following my previous post was that I was contacted regarding tickets to see Taylor Swift in concert this summer- Let's just say that it was an awesome surprise and my daughter is completely elated! It definitely helped make her 10th birthday one of the very best and most definitely a memorable one! (And for the ones who made it possible, and you know who you are, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you from the very bottom of my heart!!!)

So lately, I've been working on some illustrations for my own stationery and I am very happy to say that I have 5 designs done so far to test the waters. I am really hoping that people will like them and encourage me to do more. I will post more about them later when I can get some good pics taken of them. At the moment, I am planning on starting out small and seeing how they will do in a few small local businesses and also on Etsy.com. I am also planning on selling my work at the Marketplace being held during the HOW Design Conference in Austin this June. I am going to be sharing a table with a designer friend of mine, Kelly Parke, as we also have a special somethin'-somethin' we're going to be selling together. (It's a surprise! hehe) I am so excited that I will be able to go again. This will be the 3rd HOW Conference that I will be going to. Even though I self-pay 100% of my way to the conference, I think that it's worth it. There is so much to be gained by going. The sessions are usually really inspiring and full of good information. There are so many opportunities to do some networking. And not counting the other fun stuff to do on the side! I can't wait!!!

I have to work on some more birthday party invites for my youngest son this evening....he's wanting an Indiana Jones kind of party. So I am trying to brainstorm some ideas on what I could do....should be interesting! LOL

My daughter turns 10 today. To her, it's a big, monumental birthday. Granted, it's not 13 nor the 'Sweet 16' but to her, it's still a big deal. (And what kid doesn't think that their birthday isn't monumental every year, right? LOL)
She's this HUGE Taylor Swift fan and really wanted a "Taylor Swift Party" theme for her slumber party this coming Saturday. Well, considering that we live in a rather small town and the chance of me getting to the city before her party was pretty slim (and finding any sort of Taylor Swift party supplies might be hard because I don't even know if there are any that exist), I decided just to use my creative design skills to make some myself! I was actually sprung onto the idea of creating "backstage passes" when my daughter and I were looking at events for Cheyenne Frontier Days in July. Happens to be- Taylor Swift is going to be playing again this year (opening for Kenny Chesney, I believe.) My daughter was begging and pleading for me to buy tickets and also asked me if I could buy backstage passes because she would absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE to meet Taylor Swift. I did have to give her the unfortunate news that buying tickets would have to wait and that you can't just "buy" backstage passes....(But I did tell her that if she helped save up money towards tickets and did more chores and such, I'd consider getting them....) And then that led to the idea of making backstage passes for invitations to her slumber party.

They're printed on a pearl metallic paper that I had at home and laminated in those self-stick laminating sheets for pictures that you can buy in the office supply section or office supply store. The sheets come in packs of 5 for around $3.00. I also had rivets at home so I was able to punch out holes and secure eyelets to run black ribbon through. I think that they turned out really cool and my daughter and her friends absolutely LOVE them! And I know that my daughter will look back at this birthday and remember those invites and that really means a lot to me. :) "Sleeping Bags and Singing Voices Required at door....." There's karaoke at this party which means I'll need to go find some ear plugs next! LOL

So, I was on Etsy.com last night, just browsing and looking to be inspired. I am wanting to start selling my own stuff on there soon. I have to get my act together and get some stuff done and organized so I can do it...Anyhow, I ended up finding this awesome little felt bird named "Kirsty Kingfisher" on Etsy's main page and just HAD to have it! She sings to me in such a familiar song, I just knew I needed her to come live at my house. (scroll to the bottom of this blog and you might understand...) The seller, cherrypips, has a bunch of other great felt brooches listed on there and will also do custom designs for you as well. This is my very first purchase on Etsy (although I could probably spend a fortune on there!) I can't wait to get this!!! Thank you soooo much, cherrypips!

A Belated Christmas Card

I know this is really late posting but it's taken this long just to get pictures taken. Granted, I also realize that these are not the best pictures because they really don't do the card justice (it's hard to tell but the little green hearts are glittery), but it's at least something for now until I can get better ones taken....

Anyhow- this is the Christmas card that I designed for this year. My plan is to expand more on stationery design and have my own line out by the end of this year. There are a few places that I know of that are willing to sell my work and then, of course, there is Etsy.com which I plan to utilize this year...it's baby steps but it's working in the direction that I really want to go in. I know that I have the creative ability and talent to do more with my work than my day job allows. I can't let that go to waste. It would be a crime worthy of punishment, in my opinion. So while I'll be plugging along doing production design during the day, I really want to push myself more creatively by night. hehe

I hope everyone had a great New Year's...I cannot believe it's already 2009!

What do I Want 2009

I decided that instead of coming up with a list of resolutions for this year, I wanted to think of things a little differently. I thought of calling it my "Aspirations List" or even a "Reminders for 2009" list. But it just really doesn't fit for what I really really need it to be. I need something more direct, more blunt...Maybe it's from watching The Notebook this last week or maybe The Women just recently but something struck a nerve and really got me thinking..."WHAT DO *I* WANT?" Really....what is it that I want? I have been thinking that if I can truly come up with the answer to this, I can create my own little list and from there, create the babysteps needed to accomplish those things. I mean, I keep thinking in my head, "what do I want? what is it that I truly, deeply want? Not what others want, not what I think others want me to want (okay that was a bit much)...but truly...what do *I* want?"

So, here is my idea: During the month of January of this brand new year, I will aspire to create a plan, use an entire wall if needed to visually communicate to myself what it is that I want. Some might call it a "Dream Board" or an "Inspiration Board" or whatever. But that doesn't really work for me. I dream enough as it is. Sometimes I think that if daydreaming could be a paid occupation, I'd have a load of wealth but my dreams would eventually fade. That would be a very sad thing. But anyhow....what I want and what I need is something that is visually more demanding of me. I need that wall to literally scream at me "WHAT DO YOU WANT?" and demand that I answer. But here's the catch- I really have to dig deep for what I put up there. What I put up there, they have to be things that I have to work for and earn. And once it's on the wall, I have to commit to doing the work needed to try and accomplish it. If I don't succeed, it won't be because I didn't try. But I'll never know until then. I know that for most part, the things that I really want are attainable. If it's something I really want, wouldn't it be worth investing more time and effort in accomplishing?

No more resolutions, no more wish lists....it's time to start demanding more from myself, leave no room for excuses! It's 2009- BRING IT ON!!!!

Okay...so it's a little early to be celebrating but in light of the new year, I am sure I am not alone in the quest to find a new calendar. I actually have been thinking very heavily about creating my own, which I do actually plan to do. But considering how this last month has gone, I haven't had much time to do any fun creative anything, so they're going to be late-coming. However, I still wanna do them. I have been tossing around a few ideas. One is to create an 18 month calendar instead of just a regular 12 month calendar. That could possibly make up for my design-tardiness. Maybe....But I have also thought about a rather timeless calendar that would feature individual cards to flip for the days of the week, day of the month and month of the year. I think it's quite a lovely idea. I just need to quit procrastinating and make the time to get it done, however I end up doing it!

In the meantime, while I know everyone is just so anxious and on the edge to buy this anticipated calendar I plan to design, I thought I would share some of the calendars that I really enjoy and have been trying to decide on whether to buy or not and WHICH ONE!!!!

I did recently buy a very cool screenprinted calend ar from Ink Lounge Gallery about a month ago, but I bought it for someone else and did not keep. I am actually wishing I would have grabbed an extra one for myself. I still might....

I found this really cool 2009 Thyme calendar from norawhynot on Etsy (above). I love the illustration style and the colors she chose to use. They also come with stories about the illustrations and thyme and it's a perfect size!

I also found this 5.5"W x 18.5"H calendar (above) from Suzy Jack*. I really like the size of this calendar because it isn't a traditional, typical size. The illustrations flow really well with the style and really make this calendar one of the most beautiful ones I have seen so far. The site is worth exploring, you'll find a lot of other fun accessories that simply thrill my creative soul!

I think that one of my favorites that I have seen has to be this adorable 6"x6" calendar (above) from Night Owl Paper Goods. I'd buy this one in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, they are all sold out! BooooooHoooooo!!!!! But I still wanted to share because these owls are just adorable and with all the little owl doodles that I have been doing lately, I have actually considered designing my own fun little owl calendar. And well, since I can't buy this one, I might have to do it...at least for myself! But do check out Night Owl's site because there are a lot of other really great things to see- they have some fabulous stationery.

I do plan to post again, maybe over this weekend when I might have a little more time (and when I might take a break from working on my own calendar! LOL) But until then, I hope that everyone has a safe and very Happy New Year! I look forward to the possibilities that 2009 may bring!

December Blues

I realize I haven't been so great in keeping up on posting on here in the last month but there really has been a lot going on. I wish I could say that it was good and happy stuff but unfortunately, it hasn't. In short, there was a death in the family and that along with the holidays have definitely consumed a good share of time and focus of my family.

And while we do feel our loss during the holidays, we can reflect on the good times we have had throughout the year and all that we have truly been blessed with. I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas! I hope that the new year brings nothing but good things to each and every one of you!

Okay....so I am heading to Denver this evening to spend Thanksgiving at my sister's with a good share of our family. I am definitely looking forward to it as I have been craving for a break from this two-star town! I am looking forward to spending time with my family, but especially my sister. She and I are actually going to head over to Belmar on Friday afternoon. I have a poster to pick up from Idaho Stew, possibly meeting up with a few people there and I think we might even do a little shopping in the area while we're there. I was checking out what sort of shopping and entertainment, etc. that Belmar had to offer and was pretty happy to see some really cool shops- if nothing else, I want to stop in and browse at least for aesthetic joy! One particular store that catches my eye is one called Composition. Let me tell you, I am liking what I see and my personal wish list has now grown. I like cool coffee mugs and the Pantone mugs are awesome! Color me happy there's a color just for me!

And they also sell CHOCOLATE made by Mast Brothers Chocolate. I am not the biggest chocolate fanatic out there. It's true, I like it but it's not something I HAVE to have. But I might just have to buy a few of those chocolate bars. Look at the packaging! They're gorgeous!

There are also a lot of really cool items that are rePurposed or made out of recycled materials. Gotta dig that!

Anyhow- I know that with the economy being where it's at, it has an effect on so many...myself included. However, it is a good time to take a pause and really think about all the things you are blessed with, all the things that you are thankful for. Life gets crazy and my life is usually full of chaos and so I know how hard it can be to take those moment to really breathe in the reality of all the great things I have. Truly, I know I am blessed.

I love typography. I really, sincerely adore it. Those who know me well know how much I enjoy playing with type so I always get a thrill when I get those Veer emails advertising new fonts. And it is actually from one of those great emails that I found this font. I totally and absolutely am drooling over this one. I love love loooooooove it! It's called "Dear Sarah Pro". I want it so much. I envision making so many pretty things with it. You can practically smell the ink and the wax-sealed stationery....yummmm! Another great thing that I love about this font is that it also includes extra characters that have flourishes, pretty hand-drawn looking dingbats and other pretty swashes. Oh and how beautiful my name looks in this font....I'm adding this to my list I'm sending to Santa...

Dog Camping

Okay. After recently adopting our newest canine family members, miniature schnauzers: Alice and Bella (yes, I know!), I am all of a sudden aware of all the fun little things that cater to little dogs! I think a person could easily spend a fortune on their lil doggy loves and this cool pet camper from Gibraltar Furniture is definitely no exception. I doubt that I'd ever spend this much on anything for my dog. (I can't even spend that much on myself!) But it's still so cool that I had to throw it up on here! I mean, come on! It's just cool!

1PT. Rule Comic

I have to give my applause to my fellow Nebraskans at 36Point for their new venture: 1PT. Rule Comic. The comic strip offers humor that only a designer could appreciate. The comic also carries over the humor of the double-duo from The Reflex Blue Show, Nate Voss (illustrator and designer of 1PT.Rule) and Donovan Beery. Those who are familiar with the show know what I'm talking about! There's new comics out every Monday, Wednesday and Friday- so if you are needing a bit of a comic relief, it's worth checking out!

I know, I know...it's been well over a month since I have posted anything on here. But I guess better late than never, right?

Let's see, since my last post, what has been going on? Well, I am working on a top secret project with my BDGF (Best Design Girl Friend) and as soon as I am able to, I will post more on it. The only thing that I will share is that I am getting to work in some of my favorite areas: typography and illustration. Yum! But that is all I can say about it for now! hehe

I am trying to put together some sketches for the next HOWiezine book that is due in less than a month away! The theme of the zine is 'Positive/Negative'....so many ideas....but I decided that if I can pull it off, I would REALLY like to integrate some kinetic design into my contribution! I've already heard how awesome the covers are...Patti's already got them. I can't wait to see them!

I also signed up to contribute to a HOWie poster again this year. I was able to contribute to last year's poster and it turned out great. Sadly, I have mine on top of a shelf, collecting dust. Someone should smack me! I need to get that thing put up somewhere. :::sigh:::

Today is Friday and while I enjoy the weekend as much as anyone else, I have to come back into work for a few hours tomorrow and I also have a monster house full of ick that desperately needs not just a maid but a whole cleaning crew. They'd all leave running and screaming!

Political Design

I was compelled to write in my blog this morning after receiving an email from HOW Design Blog featuring a series of posters designed by Campbell Mithun for upcoming Republican National Convention in Minneapolis/St. Paul. They were designed for The UnConvention which is being sponsored by The Walker Art Center. I have to honestly say that when I saw these posters, I just didn't get it....I know that they are trying to make light of the reputation of the Replublican party, but I don't think it's the best work that I have ever seen. Plus, for me, the message is a turn-off. The designs lack creative imagination, in my opinion. I think that after seeing the poster designs for the Democratic National Convention, I am just disappointed.

I saw the poster designs for the Democratic National Convention a few weeks ago. They were designed by Idaho Stew. I have to say that from the moment I saw them, I loved them. I just love the illustrative design...I am captivated by the creative innovation in each one. I love how they all tie in with the Democratic National Convention, and the location of DNC (Denver, CO). I am not Democratic but I am very impressed with these posters. I would even say that they are persuasive. Those who know me, they know that I am not big into politics. I just don't get involved in a lot of discussion regarding politics. This year, I have to admit that I have been unimpressed with the candidates on all sides from the beginning. I can't say that any of them have won me over and that is a sad thing. However, if it were based on design savvy alone, I'd have to say that the Democrats definitely have the lead there. And the amazing thing is that design is viral...whether we like it or not, design does influence.

Drip.Dot.Swirl

I just read exciting news about a book that is coming out in March of this next year that is called Drip.Dot.Swirl by Von Glitschka. I cannot wait to get my hands on this book!

Back in May, after returning from the HOW Design Conference, I was sifting through swag and found an awesome little swatchbook featuring Mod-Tone paper from French Paper. I fell in love with it instantly. I was seriously considering using some of this paper for a stationery project that I was working on at the time as well as possibly for my graduation invitations. I also realized that a friend of mine had sent me a Christmas card that featured this paper. So, after talking to her about it, realized that I didn't necessarily need to use that paper to get the same effect. I could just create my own patterned tiles. And I also remember asking Von about this subject as well. As always, Von was great about responding to my email with some tips and suggestions. So, when I saw his post regarding his book, I got really excited about it!

And as for my own pattern tile creations, no, I haven't actually made any. I shelved the stationery project temporarily because I have been so busy with other things. But I am seriously thinking about taking them off that dusty shelf and working on some patterns to use with them. There is also a package design project that I am going to be working on soon, perhaps I can apply pattern tiles to that as well??? Hmmmmm......my creative voices in my head are not congregating....

In any case, stay tuned for more on patterned tiles and also more information about Von's book. I am sure I'll be mentioning it again in the near future!

Time to go to an exhibit!

I just received an email from Ink Lounge Gallery yesterday that inspired me to throw up here on my blog. I get periodic emails from Ink Lounge Gallery but decided that in my pursuit to find more topics relating to design/illustration and such, this topic would be great to mention. Donovan Beery of eleven19 (as well as The Reflex Blue Show and formerly of Be A Design Group) actually introduced me to Ink Lounge Gallery's website as I had mentioned to him that I was wanting to learn how to do screen printing. Ink Lounge Gallery actually offers periodic workshops in screen printing and so I signed up to get their newsletter as I wasn't able to take a workshop at the time. Granted, I still have not been able to make it to Denver to take a workshop but I am really hoping that I can before the year is up! (I have 5 months left, so surely I can fit something in, right?!)

Anyhow- what I was wanting to share was that they currently have Jay Vollmer's work on exhibit from Friday, August 1 through September 21st. Yes- today is the opening of the show and it will be from 6-9pm at Ink Lounge Gallery which is located at (I believe) Block 07 Belmar, 445 S. Saulsbury St., Studio H in Lakewood, Colorado. You can also call (303) 321-7101 to make sure that I have the information correct. Their hours are from Tues-Friday 12-5, Sat & Sun 12-6.

I don't know if you have heard of and know Jay Vollmer's work. Before getting the email from Ink Lounge Gallery, I can't say that I have. But I still wanted to check it out and see what sort of work he did. I have recently been interested in screen print and letterpress work. There is something so very cool about more handmade type work that just grabs my attention. I found that Jay Vollmer's work has a lot of this quality I enjoy. There is a hard edge to most of his work that I do like. I love altered collage type work and so this definitely caters to that category in a lot of ways. I realize that a lot of my illustration work seems to be a bit on the "clean" side but when it comes down to it, I really like imperfection....a ragged, rugged, rough edge. LOL

The hard question is- will I be attending? To the open show- probably not. I just found out about it and know that there is no way I can break away to drive to Denver right now. I might have the opportunity to see the exhibit before it is over and I am going to try to make an effort to do so. But as busy as my schedule has been lately with not just work but extracurricular stuff going on, it's hard to plan trips like that. However, I hope that anyone reading this is able to make it, that they do go and see it!

What a week!

Okay. So it's been over a week, I realize but there has been a lot going on! I had my graduation reception on Saturday, July 12th and it turned out pretty good. Mostly family and closest friends attended. My best friend from Rawlins, Wyoming came down with her husband and son and stayed with us. We had so much fun and I was so sad when she had to leave to go back home.

July 17th was my birthday. Thirty-Four years. Geesh. Another year bites the dust. I was watching E.T. with my kids the other night as it was a 25-year anniversary showing. I really felt old. I realized that I was my daughter's age when the movie came out. I was NINE. And I remember going to the theater when the movie came out. But the funny thing is that despite how old I have aged, that movie remains rather timeless. LOL

Let's see...what else have I been doing? Well, I am still working on the murals for the fire dept. I basically got the concepts of them mapped out and this week, I am probably going to be sketching them out on the walls. Maybe ready for paint by this weekend.

I also went to Taylor Swift/Rascal Flats concert with my nine year old daughter, a friend of hers and her friend's mom. I was told that Taylor Swift wasn't very good in concert, but I have to admit, going in with that expectation, I was rather surprised that she wasn't really that horribly bad. She actually was pretty good. My daughter was absolutely thrilled and just beamed the entire time that Taylor played and so, that is what really matters. On a side note- my daughter has aspirations to be writing music, learning guitar and such so that by the time she is 13 years old, we'll go to Nashville so she can make it big just like Taylor Swift. Ahhhhh....to be nine again.....oh but I guess I am still dreaming, too....so perhaps I am still nine as well? As for Rascal Flats....awesome, awesome, awesome! They actually happen to be one of my favorite bands and so getting to see them was definitely a PERK! I would love to go to another concert of theirs in the future...hopefully with better seats or maybe even standing room only. Those guys totally rock!

'I Am Free'

Okay...I realize that this is TWO posts in one day but I had to say something about {we are}storytellers. They have some of the most awesome digital scrapbooking kits that I have seen. Not that I have seen a lot. I'll admit- I have never done any digital scrapbooking before. I guess I have been busy with other realms of creativity, I have never crossed over into this area before. But I wonder why??? Oh, the time I could waste...I know that I could get easily lost in my own private world playing with this stuff! I have tons of scrapbooking stuff at home, love rubber stamping, creating altered art and such. I have never done a lot of scrapbooking, though, despite all the stuff I have to do it. Most of the time, when I get into creating stuff like that, I have ended up creating cards or altered art of some sort. But rarely a scrapbook page. Don't ask why because I have no idea. But in any case- this set of digital scrapbooking called "I Am Free" totally ROCKS! I don't know if I would necessarily use it for scrapbooking, as my given history, but I could totally come up with some other great ideas in which to use these for! This is the sort of stuff that inspires me and speaks to that creative monster inside!!!

Cool Luggage!

I don't know how many of you follow trendhunter but I will sometimes check it out just for fun. I went and was looking at it this morning and found this awesome Pop Top luggage made by Publicworks. I made the mistake a couple of years ago by investing in a simple, standard black luggage set. I didn't realize until I had to use it on an airflight to Atlanta that my luggage looked like everyone else's! I recently went on a trip to New England and found this same issue. Granted, I should have found some way to mark my bags so they would be easier to recognize, but I didn't. And I remember standing there by luggage claim in Boston, waiting and waiting and waiting for our luggage to come around, only to discover that it was already there, set aside. The dumb thing was that we had walked by it and I remembered seeing it and thinking it looked like ours yet thinking, "Nah, that can't be ours." Well, it was. In any case, I plan to do something to my luggage to make it more identifiable for the next trip we take! I would love to have this luggage but I have a feeling that I am going to have to wait awhile. But I still wanted to share because I love this concept! Funny enough, the dots, while they make me think of things like comic book art and pointillism, I also thought about Unboundary which is a design studio located in Atlanta that I was able to visit last year. It's just FUN, how could you not love it?!

Recuperating & Reviving

Wow! That 3-Day weekend blew by way too fast! I hope that everyone had a great Fourth of July weekend!

Our neighborhood had a block party. One of my neighbors decorated their entire backyard with a tropical theme. They had tropical plants, waterfalls, tiki torches, leis, grass skirts. You name it! There was even an open bar serving beer and fun foo-foo fruity drinks like dacquiries, margaritas and pina coladas. (All my faves!) And to top it all off, we had a hog roast and a fire pit. Later that night, we all pooled our fireworks and blocked off part of the street in front of our house (with city's permission, of course) and had quite a display. It was good times, for sure!

Well, now that the holiday is over, it's back to work...I have a lot to get done this week! This week is not just about recuperating but also reviving! My graduation reception is this Saturday and so I have a lot of prep work to get done for that. I also need to get those sketches done for the murals for the fire dept. this week. Someway, somehow...I need to make it happen! Pass me some caffeine, please!

"Drewsie's"

I have been thinking about an idea all morning and am wanting to find a way to make it happen. A little girl from here was hurt in a farm accident this last weekend. She and her brothers actually went to daycare and preschool with my youngest children. My daughter suggested making a card to send and that sort of triggered my idea. As I am wanting to work on creating my own line of stationery and accessories, I thought it would be really great to also create a line that would be for tweenies and call it "Drewsie's" after the little girl hurt in the accident. And then, once I am able to produce and market pieces for "Drewsie's", a percentage of the sales would go to help her family out. This isn't something that I'll be able to do overnight as I realize the work that will have to go into this. But I would like to be able to use my design abilities to do something to help out in some way. I wish I could give all proceeds to the family, but unless I can get the materials and printing costs donated for the cause, I have to use some of the proceeds to cover that expense. Otherwise, what's left will be donated for the cause.

But in any case, this will be something that hopefully I will be able to talk more about as I am able to work on it and able to get things to take off! The biggest problem is that I have so much I am wanting and needing to do, that it may be a while for it to get developed. But I am hoping that the longevity of the work will be beneficial for some time to come. And as big as my aspirations may be, hopefully go on to help other families in similar situations with needs. Why, Oh Why Can't I?

Okay, well with the work that I have been doing in preparation for my graduation reception in a couple of weeks, I decided to play off of it for my blog. I am actually working on a campaign that will include two different posters, some notecards, 3"x3" business cards, and some other fun little goodies. The pieces feature fun and bright colors that I love using in my work. I also illustrated a fun and crazy little blue bird. While thinking of blue birds and something catchy to go with it, I thought of the song, "Over the Rainbow" and about "...if happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow...Why, oh why can't I?" And I thought- "THAT'S IT!" I mean, here I am, a graduate with all these crazy ideas, creative madness thriving in the very core of me and the limitless possibilities. So that leads me to..."Why, oh why can't I?" Why can't I push my creative abilities? Why can't I do what I truly want to do? Why can't I show people what I am capable of? Why can't I prove to myself that I have what it takes...OH the rebel in me sees that question and says, "Bring it on!" LOL

So I have adopted this bird and this theme...."Why, Oh why can't I?" but I have to share another funny connection to it. Most who really know me well know that I have a secret collection of Wizard of Oz memorabilia. I won't say that I seek the stuff out. At one time, I suppose I did. I thought it would be really cool & completely wicked to decorate my kitchen with a Wizard of Oz theme. I had always liked the Wizard of Oz as a child. I love poppies. I always wanted a pair of those ruby slippers. (But what little girl didn't, right?!) And so to have something so crazy as the Wicked Witch of the East's legs sticking out from under my dishwasher was just a riot of an idea. But alas- I soon discovered that my ideas weren't all that unique to have a Wizard of Oz kitchen and so I ended up not doing it. (I wanted to be the only one with a cool Wizard of Oz kitchen, you know!) And, despite that I no longer have that desire to collect the stuff, my mom still picks up Wizard of Oz memorabilia for me anytime she ever runs across anything. So...I just thought it was fun to twist that little tidbit into my birdy design. LOL I know my mom would appreciate that at least!

A boost for the day...

HOW Design M agazine is hosting a series of Webinars featuring speakers such as Jeni Herberger, Peleg Top, Ilise Benun, and I am sure many others following. I actually joined in for the first session of the series by Jeni Herberger: Planning Your Design Career. I was able to go to one of her sessions at the HOW Design Conference in Atlanta last year but didn't make it to any of her sessions at the conference in Boston. I really enjoyed the webinar session. Since I just finished up school and am currently trying to map out what I really want to do, where I want to take my career, I found that this particular session was very informative. A lot of it was stuff that I have heard before but I find that sometimes I need a little redundancy in order to get it through my thick head! Seriously though, I think that it really depends on where you are at with your career, with your life in general and your state of mind when listening to advice such as this. Had I listened to this same webinar a year ago, would it have affected me as it did yesterday? Would I have gotten as much out of it? Would I have started applying the concepts sooner? What about 2 years from now? 5 years from now? 10 years from now? I think that within this next year, it will be interesting to reflect upon the steps that I have made in working towards my goals. Right now, I feel inspired and ambitious...let's see how I keep that up!

Why Hello, there!

I have to admit that I haven't been the best at blogging in the past. But I realize how many people really dig 'em and I am starting to see why! There are definitely a lot of really great blogs out there! It's time I start taking blogs a bit more serious!!!

So, why now? Why not?! I just finished up school. My brain just bubbles with creative ideas that I need to NOW start working on developing. I have a job but it's not creative enough to keep me satisfied. So I am working on a plan...

Why should you be reading my blog? Hmmmm....I could say that it's because you are completely bored and have nothing better to do, but I won't. But really the answer will lie in the content- I will be sharing my journey with you. The ups, the downs, the cool discoveries, my wishes, my aspirations, funny stuff, sad stuff....who knows. I have a lot to learn with all this blogging. Like adding more stuff on my blog page. But for now, I'll just stick with the 'less is more' and work on adding 'more is more' for next time.
